Frontline Education, a company whose software helps school districts handle administration and workforce management, is notifying districts that attackers broke into part of its environment and stole employee information. According to the notification letter seen by BleepingComputer, the company’s security team identified “a vulnerability in a third-party software product we use” on August 14, 2026, which allowed unauthorized access. Frontline says it remediated the flaw, brought in an independent cybersecurity firm and engaged law enforcement. It has not said which third-party product was involved or when the intruders first got in.
In the notice shared by one district, every employee was affected, and the exposed data included Social Security numbers, email addresses and home addresses. That district reported 1,210 impacted employees. Administrators at several districts independently confirmed the notices were legitimate after they began arriving on October 1 from a Cyberscout address. The total number of districts and people affected is unknown, and Frontline had not answered BleepingComputer’s questions at the time of reporting.
How to check if you’re affected
Affected products are Frontline Education services used by your school district, so the check starts with your employer rather than with a device or software version.
- Look for the notice: impacted adults are being offered two years of free credit monitoring and identity protection through TransUnion; minors are offered cyber monitoring services. Frontline says it will send individual notices on districts’ behalf unless a district opts out by October 16.
- Verify before you click: the breach notices are being mistaken for phishing. Confirm with your district’s HR or IT office before entering personal details, and go to the enrollment site your district gives you.
- Protect your identity: if you work for a district that uses Frontline, consider a credit freeze with the three credit bureaus, and watch for tax-filing and benefit-fraud attempts that use a Social Security number.
